Travel Diary and Almanac
A travel journal of a family’s move from near Ashland, Nebraska to near Arcata, California via train recorded in an incomplete copy of an unidentified almanac for 1874. The almanac begins with April 1874 and includes 89 pages of printed material including engravings. The journal or diary section at the end of almanac includes notes for all but seven days for 1874.
Some of the engravings include: German draught oxen, walls of Bologne, France, royal tiger, kangaroos, American elk, a fox raiding a roost, musk oxen, balloon travel, zebras, lobsters fighting, dragon fly, grand geyser of Iceland, falls of Zambesi, gathering grain, and others.
A partial transcription of the journal entries provided by the seller:
“January 22nd and 25th, Stormy. Strait’s boy killed by horse. John went to the office, got a letter for Hattie….Pleasant. Went to Strait’s to the funeral. Brother Worley preached....”
“March 24th –April 18th, Started for Cal. at ½ 10 A.M…..Pleasant out by North Platt…Pleasant at North Platt just at sun down…Cool day. Riding on the cars….Very nice day changed cars at 5:35 P.M. Cars come uncoupled and left us on the track….Raining a little. Saw some squaws and papooses alone grave…..Pleasant at Palisade…..Nice day at Hot Springs….Nice Day. At Dutch Flatt. Paid 55 cts for butter…Arrived at San Francisco at 7 A.M. Breakfast at U. S. Hotel…Moved to Franklin House kept by Curran and Crawford….Nice day. John and Ellsy went to Cloverdale yesterday…..John come home at 11 A.M. Elliza sick….Went to Gardens. Fire in town….Went to the mint and seen them make money….Pleasant. Went out to Chinatown and to Post Office. Woman clerk….Pleasant in town. Living of beef and mutton chip….Pleasant, left town, took boat Pelican for Eureka. All sick…Rain. Arrived at city at three P.M. Went to Russ House….Rain. Got on ferry “Lilia”. Come to Arcata. Got thare at 9 A.M. Stayed at Scott’s (5 mile)…Raining. Scott’s man took us to Mr. Toleman’s. Left our trunks and come horseback. Arrived at Mister Linder at three P.M….Raining, washing a little….Cool. Ironing. John and Snider hunting claim….Pleasant. Choring around. John not well. Snider plowing….Pleasant. Baking bread. Father and John out prospecting……...”

“June 8th, Cloudy. John and Father out prospecting. Laid a foundation…..June 12th, Nice day. I all alone making soap. Father and John went to Anderson’s….July 12th, Very pleasant. Home all day. Reading and singing, enjoying our selves splendid…..(July 15th -21st blank)…August 11th. Nice day. Work on barn. Two Indians here….August 26th, Shocking oats till noon. Afternoon went to Snider’s. He was shot and killed by Carlson…..August 27th – 30th, At Snider’s. At 4 o’clock started to Arcata with corpse. Got there 10 o’clock P.M….In town all day. Burial at 2 o’clock. Rilla and children at Snider’s ranch…In town. Forenoon went out to Angles. Afternoon rode over of Mr. Daniel’s house. Arrived at sundown….Went up to Snider’s. Found all well. Returned to Angles Ranch in evening. Now sundown and all alone…. September 7th, Nice day. John went to Eureka as witness, State vs. Carlson….October 21st Forenoon burring Straw afternoon. Started to dance 4 o’clock P.M…..October 22nd, Pleasant. Home from dance forenoon. Afternoon filling up grain for Backer’s
