UNO-Shizuoka Sister University Collection
The UNO-Shizuoka Sister University Collection comprises materials related to the partnership between the University of Nebraska at Omaha, USA, and Shizuoka University, Japan. UNO and Shizuoka University became sister schools in 1979, with a statement of affiliation signed by UNO Chancellor Del Weber and Shizuoka University President Ken Maruyama. The cities of Omaha and Shizuka have been sister cities since 1965, with a formal affiliation and pledge of friendship signed by Omaha Sister-City Association founder and first president Max A. Miller and Shizuoka mayor Junpei Ogino. The Omaha-Shizuoka program has fostered many cultural exchange events in both cities.
The collection includes brochures, booklets, pamphlets, and maps of Shizuoka and nearby tourist attractions (predominantly dating from 1982 to 1985, predominantly in Japanese); an English-language news clipping about the Omaha Fair in Shizuoka in 1985; a 1975 English-language article from Shizuoka University about agricultural labor in the U.S. South in the 1930s; a bilingual English and Japanese copy of the 1979 statement of affiliation between UNO and Shizuoka University; four unidentified books in Japanese; a photo album of Shizuoka University circa 1978-1979; Shizuoka University yearbooks from 1979, 1981, and 1983; and one U-Matic videocassette recording labeled "Japan, 12-85" and accompanied by a note reading "UNO-Shizuoka Univ. Celebration in Japan--possibly the official ceremony for Omaha-Shiz. sister city affiliation."
