Prairie Visions (PV) is a discipline-based art education (DBAE) professional development program for Nebraska educators, overseen by faculty from the University of Nebraska at Omaha since 1987. The premise of PV is training educators to create curriculum around the arts. This collection consists primarily of materials assembled and/or created by faculty and participants of the annual Prairie Visions institute, and other documents related to planning and assessing the institute. The collection's coverage spans from 1987 to the present. The majority of the collection comprises three-ring binders, some intact and others divided into folders by processing staff, from the annual Prairie Visions institutes for 1989-1997, 1999-2003, 2005-2009, and 2011-2013, as well as binders for two related programs in 1996 and 1998. Also included are reports from or about the institute, institute assessment documents, curriculum plans, correspondence, strategic planning documents, news articles, art prints used in activities, and other papers. Most of these documents were used in meetings, and so many are marked with handwritten annotations, some are worn or damaged, and some binders may not be in original order. In addition to the print and manuscript items, the collection includes two CD-ROMs of photo highlights from the 2009 and 2011 institutes, and 36 home-recorded videocassettes of a 14-session 1988 Pre-Service DBAE course which was foundational to Prairie Visions, and of other programs related to Prairie Visions.

Custodial History

The Prairie Visions collection was donated to the Criss Library by Professor Joanne Sowell and Dr. Frances Thurber, both UNO faculty members who have been active in planning and presenting Prairie Visions. Shari Hofschire annually sent the institute binders to add to the collection until her retirement in 2014. Many of the binders and other items in the collection are marked with the name Karen Janovy, suggesting that she is the originator of portions of the collections.
