Howell, Helen J.
Helen J. Howell was a longtime professor of education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha from 1964 until her retirement in 1996. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees at the Municipal University of Omaha. While an undergraduate at OU, circa 1953-1955, she was a member of Angel Flight, Alpha Xi, and Omaha University Women's Intramurals (OUWI), serving a term as president of OUWI. In the gap between her student years and her faculty service, she served as a teacher in the Omaha Public School system.
As a faculty member at UNO, she served on numerous committees on a variety of topics. She was involved with the UNO Summer Program for Gifted Youth, which launched in 1980 and was sponsored by the UNO College of Continuing Studies. In 1984, she received the College of Continuing Studies Faculty Service Award. In 1987, she co-founded the UNO Center for Gifted Education. She was also instrumental in instituting a daycare program on UNO campus in 1986.
She was the sister of Robert L. Howell. Relationship, if any, to Robert B. Howell (U.S. Senator, 1922-1933) is unknown. Helen Howell passed away in 2015.
