Philip Boatright graduated from the Municipal University of Omaha (presently University of Nebraska at Omaha) with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies in 1961. He went on to publish The Chambered Distances : First Poems in 1962, The Glass Wind (also known as Steppenwolf Six) in 1980, and Black Tents: Poems 1960-2000 in 2003. Boatright was the editor of Steppenwolf: A journal of poetry and opinion from its founding in 1965 through 1974. Boatright edited and published numerous works of poetry through various small presses and worked as a psychiatric nurse, massage therapist, yoga instructor and book publisher.
Boatright married Jean Shannon in 1968 and divorced her in 1978.
Boatright married Evelyn Hamilton on December 31, 1988.
